A Brief History and its Medicinal Uses.

Limes As the title says: “Lime is no doubt a wonder fruit.  It is a rounded fruit that is pointed at both ends and it is greener than lemon to which it is associated.  Its origin is Asia around India Burma and Malaysia.  And it is now mostly grown in Mediterranean basin, the West Indies, Mexico, Florida and south California and other nations.  It is estimated that this plant is cultivated in these regions for about 2500 years.  The Arabs introduced this to Europe, they brought them to Spain in the 11th century. Almost the same time it is introduced to the African countries.  It is believed that Christopher Columbus brought this to America in his second voyage to the New World in 1493.

Like limes lemon also is a small oval citrus fruit and generally it feature a yellow color.  Its inner flesh is encased in segments with an average lemon having eight to ten. Scientifically it is known as Citrus Limon.

Though it is tart to bite it flavor to many other foods, and  it is a very refreshing  too.  There are two types of lemon one is sweet in flavor and other is sour lemons.

Though it is good and a wonder working fruit , Here is an alert!!!
Or a word of caution, No doubt it goes well with most of the foods but they don’t  always mix with medication.  Like grapes limes may interact with some prescription drugs leading to higher than usual concentration of the drug in your bloodstream.  In fact, Japanese researchers advise people to avoid any citrus juice when taking medication.  Ask your doctor when you should stay away from limes.

Limes gives a good protection against Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Vitamin C rich foods like limes and lemons provide protection against inflammatory polyarthritis a form of rheumatoid arthritis.  Vitamin C can be helpful for preventing the development and progression of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart diseases.

For the better function of a strong immune system vitamin C is very essential, immune system main goal is to protect you from illness so a bit extra vitamin C may help to reduce the condition of colds, flu and other ear infections.  So the usage of vegetables and fruits high in this nutrient is very much associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes including heart diseases, stroke and cancer.

  1. Isn't that why the sailors in the British navy were called "Limeys"? They sucked on limes to keep from getting scurvy. Like your blog, visiting from A-Z.

      Thanks for the visit,
Yes, you are correct, that is what the history says and I quote: "The British explorers and traders, who were using the vitamin C-rich limes that grew in their West Indies colonies to prevent scurvy, earned the nickname "Limeys," a word that is often still used colloquially for persons of British descent" Its sucking too really....:-)

  7. Lemons and limes always make my mouth water. I have hopes of buying myself a Meyer Lemon Tree eventually. It would have to be a house plant here, though, it's much too cold to have outside. But I must say, interesting article!
