Indian Stand up Comedy: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Funniest of Them All?

Comedy has played a significant role in the world of Indian cinema. It is hard to imagine the 90s without stars like Jaspal Bhatti, Johnny Lever and others gracing major blockbusters. Back then, movies were scripted for the comedic value, for the most part. However, despite the success of these stars, stand-up comedy has not had much luck making headway into the Indian limelight.
The general perception has been that the Indian society is conservative, and they would find it hard to consume politically incorrect, no holds bar and edgy humor. The Great Indian Laughter Challenge is helping turn this around. The show is India’s mainstream introduction to stand up comedy that is proving that there is plenty of talent out there. It also brought popularity to the idea of running stand up comedy at festivals, events and pubs. The show’s longevity shows that India’s comedy industry has come a long way, with a new generation of comedians redefining what it means to be funny.
Some of the best stand up comedians in India are listed in this post.
