A Pleasant Memory With A Great Poet

(A Little Writer is Born)

Some of the co- writer's write-ups put my memory back to my school days, Yes, it happened when I was in my 6th or 7th grade.
I was an avid reader and whatever comes to hand, I read. Newspapers, weeklies, magazines and books were my favorites. In our village (Valanjavttom, near Thiruvalla, Kerala) there was a library Called Gandhiji Smaaraka (memorial) Library, I was a regular visitor and borrower of books from this library. I read many of the books novels short stories and poems of many major writers of the Malayalam language.

Malayalam newspaper's Kathukal (letters) column attracted me a lot and I started sending letters to this column. Immediately after sending letters to the newspapers I eagerly wait for the next day's paper to see my letters, but nothing published, again I send nothing published. This continued for few days without any result. Days and months passed I could not find any result. I was really frustrated at that but my passion for newspapers and writings did not stop me there, instead with more care I prepared letters and send. One fine morning as usual when I picked up the daily I found my letter printed with my name. I was overjoyed by seeing my name in print that too in one of the major and famous publication called Malayala Manorama. (The largest circulated Malayalam daily in Kerala and also the leading and largest circulated vernacular daily in India). www.manoramaonline.com
Though after a good number of rejections, the printed letter made me so happy and it made me to write more. Again I jotted down many things in my note books under the headings short stories, mini stories, poems and prose etc.
About that time I heard about a Christian magazine called "Suviseshakan" (Evangelist) published by a well known evangelist from Madurai (Tamil Nadu State). I thought of sending some of my writings to that magazine and I picked up some of the jottings from my note book and copied it in a paper and send it to the Editor. A week later I received a letter from the editor saying, 'the story which you send is good and will publish it in one of the coming issues, but the song is not up to the mark but don't give up, write more ok!! Reading the editor's letter I could not control myself, with joy I jumped up and down. My first story is going to see the light of the day, that too in M E Cherian Sir's Magazine. (A word about M E Cherian, lovingly known or called as M E C or Cherian Sir. (Before becoming an evangelist he was a high school teacher, so most of the people called him Cherian Sir). Later he become a well known Christian preacher, teacher, song writer and a poet in the Malayalam language. A good number of his Christian melodies are sung by the Malayalee (Keralaites) Christians in their congregations in worships as well as at other occasions all over the world. He published many books on spiritual subjects).
This small but great incident in my life encouraged me much. This made me to write more. Again I send another article, story and a song to Cherian Sir. With in a short span I received his reply saying, 'Your article and story I will publish it in one of the coming issues after a few corrections. It seems you are more talented in writing articles, think on that line and do write more. May God bless." This note of MEC, I read again and again. There was no limit for my happiness.
A few months later I came to know about MEC's arrival to Kumbanad (A Christian convention centre in Kerala) for the annual convention of Brethren Assemblies, as a preacher. This yearly convention takes place on December last week and goes on to January first week. Every year my parents used to attend these annual conventions. I was so eager to meet Cherian Sir and I expressed this desire to my Dad and he agreed at once. The day came, with my parents I went for the meetings at the centre. We met MEC and my Dad introduced me to Cherian Sir. He recognized the little writer and with much joy he greeted me. I expressed my heartfelt thanks to MEC for his encouragement.
Immediately he took a copy of the current issue of Suviseshakan (January) and handed over to me and said, "one of your articles is published in this issue" then he patted on my shoulder and encouraged me. The loving touch of that famous personality and those joyous moments I can't forget in my life. This was the beginning of my writing life.

The Story Behind My Pen Name

(The Story Behind My Pen Name 'Ariel')

How I procured my pen name "Ariel"? There is a story behind it. This knol is a narration of that small incident happened in my life years back. That paved a way to stick with that name as my byline.

Pic. Credit. Fanpop.com
First, let me say few words about what prompted me to write this content. Yes, just after posting my previous content, "what is there in a name" Read more here:

I just started thinking about my own words, "Yes, next time when this question arises, "What's there in a name? Think of it, you will definitely find a lot in it". Those words echoed in my mind and I just thought of my own name "Ariel" and myself: Yes, there is a big story hidden behind it. Let me narrate that in short:

Pic. Credit. Google images
If my memory is not wrong, it was, when I was studying in the seventh standard; our English class teacher (Susan Mathew) started taking a lesson from an English prose. Shakespeare's famous drama "The Tempest" (Read the summary of the story here was the lesson for that day. Ms. Susan Mathews explained the story's summary and it was so interesting that everyone eagerly listened to it. Later she asked the first bench row to read out the lesson, each of us got different character to read, and very interestingly, I got the part of an interesting character called 'Ariel' the good spirit. The session was so interesting and all of us played our part well. Later when the class was over, everyone started calling me 'Ariel'. Since the character, Ariel was an important role to play in the drama 'Tempest.' I too liked calling myself Ariel, slowly the name became famous in our school and everyone started talking about it, and the people around me called 'Ariel Philip'. Thus, born a new person by name 'Ariel Philip'.

From the very young age, I used to write articles, stories, songs and poems in Christian weeklies and magazines. For more on this line about me please visit my content titled "My Early Experience with My Writings" at the following links: Here  and Here

I used my original name 'Philip Verghese' as my byline in my early writings. Few years later, after completing my high school education, I started sending letters, stories and articles to the secular publications in the new name 'Ariel Philip, Valanjavattom' and many of my writings published in the newspapers, Children's magazines and weeklies. My first writing (a letter to the editor) with that name, got published in one of the most prestigious publication in India, "The Malayalamanorama" daily newspaper (The largest circulated daily-now it is the largest circulated regional language daily in India). In addition, many of my articles and stories published in their children's magazine called 'Balarama', which is popular among the Malayalam speaking children. Later in the Malayalamanorama newspaper's youth page "Yuvatharangam" I was a regular contributor with that pen name  ‘Ariel Philip’

Years went by and in connection with my further studies; I landed in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh where my elder sister was working. Staying with her family, I have completed my graduation and Journalism course. Slowly my writings shifted to the English language publications, and started publishing my contents in the name "P V Ariel" which is the short form of my full name "Philip Verghese 'Ariel' ".

Later I came to know about the meaning of the word 'Ariel'. Ariel means 'Lion of God'. I was so delighted to know the meaning and I decided to stick on to that name in my further writings thus born this little name 'Ariel'.

Now in my web writing I am using this name P V Ariel as my byline. Please read my interview with a well-known source producer at AssociatedContent.com, Dr. Donalad Pennigton of Texas, USA. Read more Here

Yet another content producer at AssociatedContent.com Ms. Sheryl Young of United States of America (A well known Christian writer, a Jew by birth) interviewed me and you can read more about my writings at this Interview

I am extremely happy to be here at this world wide web writing community. I am again happy to say that through this sites like associatedcontent.com, knol.google.com I could obtain a good number of like-minded people as friends and associate writers.

Presently I am working as an Editor for a Christian bi-monthly publication called 'Confident Living' published from Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

Read here my official Bio.

Let me take this opportunity one again to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my fellow writers, co-authors, readers, fans and friends for their wholehearted supports, comments and encouragement.

My sincere good wishes and season's greetings to one and all.

Thank you for your precious time to read this knol

Some of My Write-ups Published and Unpublished Part II

Some of my write-ups (published and unpublished) posted to different newspapers and weeklies Some could fetch some prizes...

CM of West Bengal
TSI Artist's view
Wild boy of the ‘left’

This is with reference to your editorial and the cover story Cold blooded Hilterian in the guise of Bhadralok. It is shocking to note that after such brutal killings of the innocent, and the culprits owning up responsibility, they are still around. The Chief Minister himself said, “If anyone has to be blamed . . . it’s me.” If he is an honest representative of the people, he must quit at once. Buddhadeb and company have put all the intellectuals of yesteryear of the State to shame. Such people should leave power at once. As you said, people of Bengal should give a fitting reply in the coming elections.

                                         Faith shall prevail

This is with reference to Shall the meek inherit the earth? which made for a revealing read. I refute the statement made by R.L. Francis. He said, “Sixty years ago, we converted from Hinduism and took refuge in Christ and Christianity in the hope of a secure and a caste discrimination-free existence. But it wasn’t quite the salvation that was promised.” I was wondering who promised him salvation? Jesus Christ or the Church? If a person changes his religion with expectations of material benefits, no doubt his conversion is not genuine. Christ never promised his followers a bed of roses; instead he insisted that it is full of hardships and sufferings. This spirit shows the color of a genuine Christian. Christ himself suffered a lot, all the while he was on earth. Epistle of Peter (1 Peter 2:21-25) says, “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth.” Only a real convert can take this cross. Vatican’s dealing with churches all over the world is an administrative set-up for smooth functioning. Nobody should question this, as it’s their internal matter and if anybody has a problem, they can willingly leave the system. No one can deny the Pope and the community’s service to the society. However, at the same time, Pope’s remarks on other religions are also not tolerable.

There truly is life below 60%

Your cover story and the editorial (June 10) clearly brought out the misconception about life in and around 90% marks. You projected an array of intellectuals and professionals who could succeed tremendously in their career and life even after obtaining a low position in their academics. Their life history is an evident fact that there is life below 60%. Our existing educational system needs a total change. Let us give more importance to creativity rather than academic results.  Our education system should develop such geniuses who can believe in themselves.
                                                                  Gender Curfew
Apropos the editorial ‘Gender Curfew’ (Times of India), the government’s select ban on women employees is a cruel decision. It concurs with a proverbial saying in Malayalam (Eliye thoppiche illam chuttu) that is to say ‘to rout or to show the anger towards the rat, someone burned the whole house’. That’s what exactly the government is doing now. No doubt the government has to face the relentless wrath of the people for its action. As you said, the government should find a feasible solution to the growing crime against the women folk. Instead of denying the constitutional equal rights to its citizen, they are supposed to give protection and safety to its citizens. What is now happening is ‘the suppose to be protectors are becoming enemies’. What a tragedy! What alternative the government can give to the number of employees out of job because of this ban? It’s a cruel joke played on the hapless employees of the state. Government should lift the ban immediately to decrease the growing tension among people.

                                        Empowering Indians!

The editorial ‘To make India Democratic…’ (TSI November 11, 2007) is indeed a great thought. An excellent idea, if implemented in its real sense, there is no doubt that there will be a new dawn in the so called Indian democracy. The word democracy will definitely obtain its real meaning in Indian politics. But, who will bell the cat, is the big question? Will our so called political leaders agree to this great thought? There is not doubt that even if there are hundreds or more Rahul Gandhis’ enter into the political arena with clean mind and good intention, their surrounding system will either spoil them or will not allow them to act with a clean hand and a pure heart. How sad it is that our present political system is rooted in corruption, violation of law, and muscle power. As you said, due to this a major number abstain from voting. If the said system introduced fully and implemented in its full sense there will be a tremendous change in Indian democracy. Thanks a lot for the wonderful

                                        Play for the country

This refers to your cover story ‘Mother of all battles’ (TSI December 10, 2007), an excellent analysis on the existing distinction between two "to-be warring" groups. Like political parties, they can fight against each other and show their mettle. It’s always good to have an alternative to the existing monopoly; for that matter, in any field, with strong and healthy opposition, things definitely work out for the good. All these years, the BCCI was enjoying this and is now realizing the facts. Let both the parties play for the country with an understanding of each other. A healthy competition is a healthy trend too. While doing this, let us make it a point not to divide the country in the name of sports. We (our politicians) have already done this damage in the name of religion. Let this not happen in the name of  sports.

                                The new selection trend

This is with reference to the report Cricket: Captaincy-Jumbo gets his due” (TSI November 19, 2007). Anil Kumble, the highly respected cricket champion has at last got his due. It's been a long awaited recognition from the BCCI, though a much belated decision. The board’s rethinking in the new selection trend is praiseworthy. Best wishes to the new captain and his team mates.
 2 December 09

                                                                Gentleman's game
The cover story ‘Monkey Business’ (TSI January 14, 2008) revealed yet another side of our 'gentlemen’s game'. Your cover photo speaks volumes. The action taken at the Sydney Test was partial. Such actions are a shame to the countries and the game itself. With the advanced technology in hand, why can’t the authorities take stern action towards the guilty? As Mr Peter Roebuck said, “the guilty must be sacked.”

                                            Bundle of info!

Your cover story 'India through compartments' (TSI March 10, 2008)made an interesting and informative reading. I felt like traveling along with your reporters and enjoyed the beauty of our country from one end to the other. I appreciate the pain you and your colleagues have taken to present this report. Also, the 'Trivia' and other features presented added color and splendor to the report. Altogether, the special issue was a marvelous one. You once again proved your masterly craft through this issue. My sincere thanks to you and your team for the bundle of information.

                                          Vote-bank politics

Arindam Choudhury brought out yet another bitter truth of the Indian administrative set up through his editorial "Salary rise...?" (TSI April 7, 2008). This is happening every year and people in the private sector and the middle and lower class face the music. As the editorial said, even respected top-level leaders have succumbed to this. Is this not vote bank politics, since our people representatives too come under this category?
27.April 08
                                                       A brilliant piece of thought
Prasanto Banerje's write-up "And Buddha Cried" (TSI August 10, 2008) revealed a great truth which we often neglect to follow. The incident was very touching and the author brought out a well meaning principle through its narration. The famous British author C S Lewis in his essay 'The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment' says... "Law breakers should be "cured" or "treated" rather than punished". Buddha's mother's words and actions did exactly the same and did wonders in Buddha's life. Thanks for sharing this experience.

                                           Love thy neighbor

             Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri
           Chief Editor The Sunday Indian

Your editorial "…. Israel have any options left, other than retaliation?" (TSI, Jan 19-25), brought out the great truth of disparity and isolation faced by this nation from all the sections of the world. Whether it is media or the authorities, from the beginning of her existence, Israel has been set apart from the nations, locked up into a unique and awesome destiny. The hireling prophet, Balaam, called Israel ‘a people who dwell alone, not reckoning itself among the nations.’ (Bible, chapter 23:9). That uniqueness is no less apparent today, as Israel fights for survival in the midst of an increasingly hostile world. Why does this tiny nation of over a five million people, occupying less than 1% of the earth’s surface, regularly call for the media attention? Why are they a major stumbling block in the international affairs? Why is this nation a fiercely contested piece of real estate in the world? Jerusalem may not qualify as the biggest or the best city in the world. But, it possesses a splendor and glory that is unparallel among world's other cities. The God chose this city to be the capital of His kingdom. There is a wonderful promise of prosperity to those who share God’s love for Jerusalem; the Bible says “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you… (Psalm 122:6)

    AUSTRALIA GETS ITS

FIRST WOMAN

PRIME MINISTER

Prime Minister Julia Gillard
(Reuters) - June 24 Australia appointed its first woman Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, who vowed on Thursday to end division over a controversial mining tax, resurrect a carbon trade scheme and call elections within months.
Former prime minister Kevin Rudd made an emotional and ignominious exit, quitting just before the center-left Labor Party was to dump him in an internal ballot and less than three years after a stunning election victory in 2007.

The Rudd government's dramatic slide in support this year sparked fears within the ruling party of an electoral defeat at a poll expected around October.     T V Watchers Beware!!!e

Every hour of Television watching increases your risk of heart disease..ware!!

Couch Potato

Pic. stock.xchng

Washington, DC:June 24 2010. Every hour you put in watching the World Cup on TV, your risk of dying from a heart disease increases by 7%, says a new study.
British researchers have found that if the average of four hours of television a day in the study were reduced to one hour, then 8% of deaths from heart disease could have been prevented.
The link between TV and heart disease was still strong even when lack of exercise, obesity, diet and smoking were taken into account.
This implies that watching TV was independently linked to heart disease and the effect is not simply due to be inactive while watching television.
Conducted by the Medical Research Council, the research, examined more than 13,000 healthy middle-aged men and women in Norfolk.
Over the 10-year study, 373 of the 13,197 participants or one in 35 died from heart disease.
Of these deaths, 30 could have been prevented if the average person watched one hour of television per day instead of four.
“Our bodies are not designed to sit for long periods and we should be aware that, as we put in the TV-hours watching the World Cup, our risk of heart disease is probably increasing,” the Telegraph quoted Dr Katrien Wijndaele, co-author of the study from the MRC, as saying.  Read More Here

   Good News to Coffee Drinkers:

Drinking Coffee Offers Protection Against Head and Neck Cancer

Coffee with snacks
pic. credit. sxc.hu

Washington, DC June 23 2010: A new study has revealed that drinking coffee offers protection against head and neck cancers.
For the study, scientists used information from a pooled-analysis of nine studies collected by the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium.
The participants who were regular coffee drinkers, that is, those who drank an estimated four or more cups a day, compared with those who were non-drinkers, had a 39 percent decreased risk of oral cavity and pharynx cancers combined.
Data on decaffeinated coffee was too sparse for detailed analysis, but indicated no increased risk. Tea intake was not associated with head and neck cancer risk.
The association is more reliable among those who are frequent, regular coffee drinkers, consuming more than four cups of coffee a day.
"Since coffee is so widely used and there is a relatively high incidence and low survival rate of these forms of cancers, our results have important public health implications that need to be further addressed," said lead researcher Mia Hashibe, assistant professor in the department of family and preventive medicine at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, and a Huntsman Cancer Institute investigator.  Read More at this link. The world’s largest social network is aiming for 1bn users globally in the next few years, its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, told delegates at the Cannes Lions advertising festival on Wednesday. Russia, China, South Korea and Japan are next in its sights as it pushes its global reach.
But as Facebook aims to move further into Asia, it is still working on building a serious advertising business in the markets where it is more established.   Mr Zuckerberg said it was “out of the experimentation phase” in advertising and was now growing revenues quickly, without having to “push a lot of the growth ourselves”. June 15,  A 12-year-old Indian American activist tried to issue summons for Warren Anderson, former chief of Union Carbide over the deadliest 1984 gas disaster in Bhopal.

"Today we are here to appeal to Warren Anderson and summon him to the Indian court where he has been charged with culpable homicide, which is the equivalent of manslaughter in America," Akash Viswanath Mehta said, standing outside a skyscraper on Park Avenue, which houses the law firm that represents Union Carbide.

Akash along with his older brother, Gautama, 15, were asked to leave the premises by the building owners who said it was private property owned by H J Kalikow. The media was also not allowed to film on the property.

Is May 2013 The End of the World?

A News Report from NASA Says:  “Earth and space are coming together in a way that’s new to human history.  A solar storm, which is essentially violent eruptions in the sun, can eject destructive radiation and charged particles into space.”
There are reports of a geomagnetic storm sparked by a huge solar flare that swept over the Earth in 1859. Telegraph wires shorted out and set houses on fire. A brilliant aurora was seen in Hawaii—so bright that  “people could read newspapers by [its] red and green glow.”
Scientists predict  that in May 2013, the sun’s solar cycle will peak at about the same level as
in 1859. (This content courtesy a post on These are closely connected to magnetic fields – which are hazardous for satellites and space stations. Scientists predict  that in May 2013, the sun’s  solar cycle will peak at about the same level asin 1859. (This content courtesy a post onGawker.com)
