Introduction: 

PV - 2010

A knol Author from Kerala, presently based at Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.  A follower of Jesus Christ.  A freelance writer/poet  and an Editor of a Christian bi-monthly magazine.  Born and brought in Kerala, A southern state in India.

My work has appeared in newspapers, weeklies, magazines and on the web, mainly on Christian religion and the Bible. I was a reporter and contributor for Malayalam weeklies and magazine mostly of Christian publications. I am a regular contributor to the web since 2007, and now regularly contribute to the Google's Knol pages.

My Basic education was in Malayalam, a popular regional language in Kerala, one of India's southern states.  I have completed my Pre -University  education in English from St. Aloysius College, Edathua, Kerala, and  finished higher studies from Osmania University Hyderabad and Ranchi university). I have secured my Postgraduate diploma in Journalism from The Rajendra Prasad Institute of Mass Communication (Bhavan’s College) in Hyderabad.

I was an avid reader in my early days, and many of my Knols capture the memories of this time.

John MacArthur: A well known author and preacher, President of  "Grace to You"  Ministries, and  Masters College and Seminary, Sun Valley, CA). He has authored more than 30 books, including fifteen volumes of the 'MacArthur New Testament Commentary', Charismatic Chaos, Signs and Wonders Speaking and scores of articles and study guides.

A Word  About My Involvement with Google's Knol:

Though I have joined knol on September 23rd 2008 I was inactive for quite sometime and recently I started contributing again and it’s really interesting and encouraging to interact with people here, though I had some unpleasant experiences with few, but that was a blessing in disguise and it helped me to go further with more vigor and enthusiasm. And within a short span I could make it to the ‘Top Viewed Author Award’ list and could make comments and reviews to the other authors at knol.  I now introduce and encourage my friends and other contacts to join this community called KNOL  Though knol is still in its infancy thousands of contributors are already joined and it is a fast growing website to acquire genuine and trustworthy information about anything in this universe.  There is a good response to my call and few are already here with their knols on my invitation and doing a tremendous job here.

A Word About My Writing Experience:

              

The role of the Hindu newspaper describes some new experiences I had after leaving my native place. As I have mentioned in one of these Knols, I slowly shifted my writing from Malayalam to English. A good number of my works were published in the print media, and have procured many literary prizes for my writings.  My work has appeared in newspapers, weeklies, magazines and on the web, mainly on the Christian religion and the subjects related to the Bible. I have also concentrated on subjects like current affairs, social problems and politics with many of my political articles appearing in different print media. Before joining Knol I was an active member and source/content producer for the site called Associatedcontent.com (AC).  I really enjoyed being with people there and had good rapport with many co-writers there.  From AC, I secured a good number of contacts in the writing field and I still maintains those relationships.  Two of the AC authors interviewed me. My first interview was with Mr. Donald Pennington of USA. Donald is an active member and source/content producer/contributor at AC, and a top 1000 and Hot 500 badge holder. മകന്റെ മോഷണം പോയ ബൈക്കിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പോലീസ് സ്ടെഷനില്‍ പരാതി നല്‍കി അയാള്‍ കാത്തിരുപ്പ് തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ പലതു കടന്നു പോയി .

F I R രജിസ്റ്റര്‍  ചെയ്യുന്നതിനു പോലും അവര്‍ പല തടസ്സങ്ങള്‍ പറയുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി

ഞങ്ങള്‍ കന്ട്രോള്‍ റൂമില്‍ അറിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്, അവര്‍ അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്  ഒപ്പം നിങ്ങളും അന്വേഷിക്കുക, മുഖ്യമായും ബസ് സ്ടെഷനുകളിലെയും, റെയില്‍വേ സ്ടെഷനുകളിലേയും പാര്‍ക്കിംഗ് സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ അന്വേഷിക്കുക കണ്ടു കിട്ടിയാല്‍ വിവരം അറിയിക്കുക.

ബൈക്ക് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവര്‍ പരാതിയുമായി വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അവരോടു പോയി അന്വേഷിക്കാന്‍ പറയുന്നത് കേട്ടപ്പോള്‍ ആദ്യം അതൊരു വിരോധാഭാസമായി അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ തോന്നിയെങ്കിലും പിന്നീടുള്ള അന്വേഷണത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത്  ഇതവരുടെ ഒരു പതിവത്രേ എന്നാണു.

തുടര്‍ന്ന്  അയാളുടെ മകനും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും പട്ടണത്തിലെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലെ പാര്‍ക്കിംഗ് സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും മെക്കാനിക് ഷോപ്പുകളിലും തിരച്ചില്‍ തുടങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച ഫലം ഒന്നും ഉണ്ടായില്ല.

വീണ്ടും കാക്കിയെ വിവരം അറിയിക്കാന്‍ അയാളും കൂട്ടരും അവരുടെ താവളത്തില്‍ എത്തി.

പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചതുപോലെ അവര്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ പതിവ് പല്ലവി തുടര്‍ന്നു.

രണ്ടു മൂന്നു ദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞു വീണ്ടും വരിക.

അയാളും കൂട്ടരും അന്വേഷണ പ്രക്രിയ തുടര്‍ന്നു ആവശ്യക്കാര്‍ അവരാണല്ലോ.

യാതൊരു പ്രതീക്ഷയും മുന്നില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞില്ല, വീണ്ടും കാക്കിക്കു മുന്നിലെത്തി.

ഇനിയെന്താണൊരു മാര്‍ഗ്ഗം?

പെട്ടെന്നാണ് പട്ടണത്തിലെ പേരെടുത്ത ഒരു പത്ര സ്ഥാപനത്തിലെ ഉന്നത ഉദ്യോഗം വഹിക്കുന്ന അയാളുടെ ചേച്ചിയുടെ മകന്റെ കാര്യം ഓര്‍മ്മയില്‍ വന്നത്.

വിവരങ്ങള്‍ നടന്നതെല്ലാം അവനെ അറിയിച്ചു

അവന്‍  പറഞ്ഞു

അങ്കിള്‍, നാളെ രാവിലെ പോലീസ് സ്റെഷനില്‍ വരിക ഞാനും അവിടെ എത്താം.

പറഞ്ഞ പ്രകാരം അവന്‍  അവിടെ എത്തി എസ്സയ്യെ കണ്ടു വിവരം പറഞ്ഞു അയാള്‍ അവരെ  C I യുടെ മുറിയിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോയി.

അയാളുടെ അനിന്തരവന്‍ ഇതിനകം സ്വയം പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തി, താന്‍ ഇന്ന പത്ര സ്ഥാപനത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണന്ന് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ C I യുടെ മുഖം ഒന്ന് ചുളുങ്ങുന്നത്‌  കണ്ടു

തന്റെ പഴയ സംഭാഷണ ശൈലിക്ക് മൊത്തത്തില്‍ ഒരു മാറ്റം വന്നത് പോലെ. താന്‍ തന്റെ പ്ലേറ്റ് മൊത്തത്തില്‍ ഒന്ന് തിരിച്ചു വെച്ചെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ മതിയല്ലോ.

ഇത്തരം കേസ്സുകള്‍ അല്പം വൈകിയേ  F I R തയ്യാറാക്കു കാരണം ഇതിനകം വാഹനം ലഭിച്ചാല്‍ അത് കൈമാറുന്നതിനുള്ള ഫോര്‍മാലിട്ടി കുറഞ്ഞിരിക്കും

ഏതായാലും ഇത്രയും ദിവസം ആയില്ലേ, അതിനെന്താ, താമസിയാതെ F I R തയ്യാറാക്കാമല്ലോ,

നാളെ രാവിലെ ഒരു പതിനൊന്നു മണിയോട് കൂടി വരിക. ഒരു ഫ്രഷ്‌ അപ്ലിക്കേഷന്‍ എഴുതി വാങ്ങിക്കോളൂ എന്നു S I ക്കു അയാള്‍ നിര്‍ദേശം നല്‍കി.

പിറ്റേ ദിവസം സ്റെഷനിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുവാന്‍ തയ്യാറാകുമ്പോള്‍ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍  നിന്നുള്ള ഫോണ്‍ വിളി 

സാര്‍ F I R തയ്യാറായിട്ടുണ്ട് വന്നു വാങ്ങിക്കോളൂ

ഉടനെ തന്നെ അയാള്‍ മകനേയും കൂട്ടി  സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍  എത്തി F I R വാങ്ങി.

ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമായി പോലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷന്റെ പടിവാതില്‍ ചവിട്ടിയ അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌  കുറേക്കൂടി യാഥാര്‍ധ്യങ്ങള്‍  നേരിട്ട്  മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞതില്‍ നേരിയ സംതൃപ്തി തോന്നി.

എങ്കിലും കുറെ ദുഖങ്ങള്‍ വീണ്ടും ബാക്കി.

ഇത്തരം ഒരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയില്‍ എത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ അവസ്ഥ ഓര്‍ത്തപ്പോള്‍ സത്യത്തില്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ ദുഃഖം തോന്നി.

അവന്‍ ആരുടെയെല്ലാം പുറകെ നടന്നാല്‍ ജനസേവകരെന്ന ഓമനപ്പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പോലീസ്സുകാരന്റെ കരുണ ലഭിക്കും.

നമ്മുടെ രാജ്യത്തെ ഈ അവസ്ഥക്കൊരു മാറ്റം വരില്ലേ?

വന്നെങ്കില്‍ എന്നാശിക്കുന്നവരല്ലേ ഒരു നല്ല പങ്കും

പത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കും, മറ്റു വാര്‍ത്താ മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഇവിടെ പലതും ചെയ്യാനാകും.  അഴിമതി അക്രമങ്ങളെ ഒരു പരിധി വരെ തളച്ചിടാന്‍ ഇവരുടെ സ്വാധീനം സഹായിക്കും.

പക്ഷെ, പലപ്പോഴും അവര്‍ പോലും വഴിവിട്ടു പോകുന്നു, വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ വളച്ചൊടിച്ചു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്ന, പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്യുന്ന   ഒരു അവസ്ഥയല്ലേ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.

അവിടെയും ഒരു കല്ലുകടി അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നതായി അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ തോന്നി,

അതെ അവരും തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാര്‍ത്ഥ താല്‍പ്പര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കും  T R P നിരക്ക് വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുമായി

പല സൂത്രപ്പ ണികളിലും   ചെന്നു ചാടുന്നു എന്നതാണ് സത്യം,

കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ യാണെങ്കിലും അതിനൊരു മാറ്റം വരില്ലേ?

വന്നെങ്കില്‍ എന്നാശിക്കുന്നവരല്ലേ ഒരു നല്ല പങ്കും, അയാളുടെ ചിന്തകള്‍ കാട് കയറിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

എങ്കിലും ഒരു മാറ്റം വരും എന്ന ആശ അയാളെ ഭരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

ആ ആശയില്‍ ആശയോട്‌ ആ നല്ല നാളെക്കായി കാത്തിരിക്കാം എന്ന ശുഭാപ്തി വിശ്വാസത്തോടെ അയാള്‍ കിടക്കയെ അഭയം പ്രാപിച്ചു.

Knol Pages Opened Its Wings and Migration Just Started - "A Happy Migration Time"

 Knol will be discontinued on May 1, 2012.

Knol authors are bit upset with Google’s decision to shut their knol shop by May 2012.

The decision of the Giant Search Engine company‘s notification pained the knol authors, whose sweat and time poured over to knol pages over the years.  Though there are some options given to migrate their knols to another platform called Wordpress.com, unfortunately the migration process to Wordpress is not functioning.. And many got panic and started migrating their knols manually.

The processed I did to migrate my knols to my blogger pages manually is by selecting the content copy and paste it in my blog page. Amazingly its working well so far.

Though it’s a tedious job authors have to do this consistently till Google fix the problem.

I wish all my fellow authors and colleagues  at knol pages "A Happy Migration Time"

This is a small tutorial on how to place a share button in the knol pages. A tip I learned recently from two of my fellow writers' here.


After placing it in some of my knol pages few curious inquiries were received on how to do this, and one of my co-authors (Narayana Rao K.V.S.S).suggested me to put this into a knol format so that others also can be benefited. Here I am with the little knowledge learned few days back.




HERE IS A STEP BY STEP TUTOTIAL




Step # 1


Click the share button given at the beginning of this knol. A window opens with a good number of social web sites.

At the top right and even at the bottom of the page there is a button called "Get the Button." Click on it. There opens another window called "Get the button." There you can see two blank columns called Page Name and Page URL fill the page name, that is the title of your blog or knol and paste the URL of your knol then click on the button called "Get Button Code." There opens another window with the code in html format. Copy and paste this code into your knol page.




Step # 3


How to paste it into your knol page?
Go to your knol page and click open the "edit this knol" button. Go to the "html" button ("Edit HTML Source") placed at the tool bar’s top extreme right, or just above your 'avtar' click open. There opens a window called Edit Html, edit html preview.


Carefully place the curser at the top of the text and paste the copied html code. Or this code can be placed at any other convenient place in the text, preferably at the top or at the bottom of the knol. Then press the "update" button. There you are with your share button in your knol. You can also have a preview on the same html editor box, thus ensuring how it will work, before saving it.)


Cool you are through.

An Email Hoax About Cancer And The Truth Behind It

I just received the following email forward the other day. By reading it I felt something fishy and I did a search to find out the credentials of it and found out a fitting reply to this hoax mail. 

For the benefit and awareness of the general public  I am re-posting the same and the search results  here below:

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINSIS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY ... Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins 1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. 3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours. 4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. 5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system. 6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc., and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. 7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.   8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumour size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumour destruction. 9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. 10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites. 11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.    So start changing your eating habits today.  WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON: a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt. b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved. c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water--best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. 12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic build-up. 13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. 14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells. 15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. 16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells. (PLEASE FORWARD IT TO PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT) This is an article that should be sent to every one you care about.               HERE IS THE TRUTH BEHIND  THE HOAX MAIL:                                     Cancer Update Email -- It's a Hoax! STATEMENT: EMAIL HOAX REGARDING CANCER Information falsely attributed to Johns Hopkins called, "CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS" describes properties of cancer cells and suggests ways of preventing cancer.  Johns Hopkins did not publish the information, which often is an email attachment, nor do we endorse its contents.  The email also contains an incorrect spelling of our institution as "John" Hopkins; whereas, the correct spelling is "Johns" Hopkins. For more information about cancer, please read the information on our web site or visit the National Cancer Institute's web site at www.cancer.gov.  Please help combat the spread of this hoax by letting others know of this statement. Another hoax email that has been circulating since 2004 regarding plastic containers, bottles, wrap claiming that heat releases dioxins which cause cancer also was not published by Johns Hopkins.  More information from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Mythbusters:  Please help curb the spread of this hoax by sending a link to this page to individuals that forward you this email.  The Truth about the "Cancer Update" Email It has become such a problem, that the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and individual cancer centers like the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have posted warnings on their Web sites. Emails offering easy remedies for avoiding and curing cancer are the latest Web-influenced trend. To gain credibility, the anonymous authors falsely attribute their work to respected research institutions like Johns Hopkins. This is the case with the so-called “Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins.” The gist of this viral email is that cancer therapies of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy do not work against the disease and people should instead choose a variety of dietary strategies.  Traditional therapies, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, work. The evidence is the millions of cancer survivors in the United States today who are alive because of these therapies.   We recognize that treatments don’t work in every patient, or sometimes work for awhile and then stop working, and there are some cancers that are more difficult to cure than others. These problems are the focus of ongoing cancer research.  We’ll go through each statement in the email hoax and provide real responses from Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center experts. Email hoax contentions #1 and 2: Everyone Has Cancer Cells Cancer is a genetic disease resulting from a variety of mutations and alterations either inherited from our parents or, more commonly, acquired over time due to environmental exposures and behaviors, such as smoking and poor diet. These alterations turn off important cell growth regulators allowing cells to continually divide unchecked, explains Luis Diaz, a clinician-scientist in Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics. This type of cell is called a malignant or cancer cell.  Among the trillions of cells in the human body, inevitably everyone has some abnormal or atypical cells that possess some of the characteristics of cancer cells, most resolve themselves and never result in cancer, says Diaz.  There is no single or standard test for cancer. There are ways to screen for certain cancers with tests such as colonoscopy for colon cancer, mammography for breast cancer, PSA for prostate cancer, and the Pap smear for cervical cancer, and these tests can detect cancers in a very early and curable stage.  For many cancers, there currently are no screening tests, and they are diagnosed when they begin to cause symptoms. Diaz and other Kimmel Cancer Center researchers are working on new tests that detect abnormal DNA shed by cancer cells into blood and body fluids and have the ability to find cancers before they cause any symptoms.  Approaches like this could lead to a broad-based screening test for cancer. Tests like these also are being used to detect cancer recurrences and malignant cells left behind following surgery, and can find cancers that are not detectable under the microscope or in x-rays. Other researchers are studying cancer stem cells.  They are stealth cells that make up just a tiny fraction of a tumor.  While small in number, investigators believe they may be the cells that drive certain cancers and lead to cancer recurrence. Therapies that target these cells are now being tested in clinical trials. A team of our breast cancer researchers has developed a method that could make it possible to detect breast cancer from the DNA contained in a single drop of blood. But, while evasive cancer cells are a challenge and the focus of ongoing research, it does not mean, as the email contends, that all patients, even those treated successfully for cancer, have cancers-in-waiting—undetectable but still there.  People are treated and completely cured of cancer everyday. Email hoax contention #3: A Strong Immune System Destroys Cancer When it comes to cancer and the immune system, it is not a matter of strong or weak as the fictional report contends, but rather an issue of recognition.  "The immune system simply does not recognize cancer. In its complexity, the cancer cell has learned to disguise itself to the immune system as a normal, healthy cell.  Cells infected with viruses or bacteria send out danger signals setting the immune system in action.  But cancer cells do not, explains Elizabeth Jaffee, co-director of cancer immunology and leading expert on cancer and the immune system."   By deciphering the methods cancer cells use to make them invisible to the immune system, Jaffee and team have developed cancer vaccines that have successfully triggered immune reactions against prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, leukemia, and multiple myeloma. Email hoax contention #4 and #5: Cancer is caused by Nutritional Deficiencies and Supplements Will Correct Them Dietary habits and lifestyle choices, such as smoking, contribute to the development of many human cancers, says Kimmel Cancer Center director William Nelson. Our experts recommend a balanced diet (see response #11) as a way of reducing cancer risk.  In terms of supplements, Nelson points out that while they may help mediate vitamin deficiencies, taking doses above what the body needs provides no added benefit. Email hoax contentions #6, 7, 8, 9, and 10: Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy Harms Normal Cells. Surgery Causes Cancer to Spread Chemotherapy and radiation therapy kills cancer cells with remarkable selectivity, says Nelson.  There are some temporary and reversible side effects common to cancer therapies, including hair loss and low blood counts.  Limiting and managing these side effects is an integral part of treatment. Surgery is the first line of treatment for many types of cancer. It does not cause cancer to spread. Cancers spread to other tissues and organs as a tumor progresses and cancer cells break away from the original tumor and travel through the bloodstream to other body sites. Email hoax contentions #11, 12, 13, and 14: Cancers Feed on Certain Foods The premise is that cancer cells feed on certain foods, and if a person refrains from eating these foods, the cancer will die. According to our experts, a poor diet and obesity associated with a poor diet is a risk factor for the development of cancer.  However, there is no evidence that certain foods alter the environment of an existing cancer, at the cellular level, and cause it to either die or grow. While there is such a thing as tumors that produce mucus, the mucus made by a tumor does not result from drinking milk.  And, eating less meat, while a good choice for cancer prevention, does not free up enzymes to attack cancer cells, explains cancer prevention and control expert Elizabeth Platz. Moderation is key, says Platz. As part of a balanced diet, sugar, salt, milk, coffee, tea, meat, and chocolate—the foods the “Update” calls into question—are all safe choices, she says.  The real concern with many of these, particularly sugar, is that it adds calories to a diet and can lead to obesity, and obesity is a major risk factor for cancer. A balanced nutritious diet, healthy weight, physical activity, and avoiding alcoholic drinks may prevent as many as 1/3 of all cancers. Platz recommends eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day and limiting red and processed meats, like hot dogs. Several Johns Hopkins experts participated in the World Cancer Research Fund - American Institute for Cancer Research report Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective, published in November 2007, which is considered by cancer prevention experts to be an authoritative source of information on diet, physical activity and cancer. Their recommendations for cancer prevention and for good health in general are: Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods (particularly processed foods high in added sugar, or low in fiber, or high in fat). Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes such as beans. Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork and lamb) and avoid processed meats. If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day. Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt (sodium). Don't use supplements to protect against cancer. Our experts recommend that people meet their nutritional needs through their food choices. While vitamin supplements can be helpful in people with nutritional deficiencies, evidence suggests that supplementation above what the body can use provides no added health benefit.  Email hoax contention #15: Cancer is a Disease of Mind, Body, and Spirit Cancer is a disease caused by genetic alterations.  Many times, these alterations occur through our own behaviors—cigarette smoking, a poor and unbalanced diet, virus exposures, and sunburns, says cancer prevention and control expert John Groopman.  How stress, faith, and other factors influence this is largely unknown.  We would like people to be happy, loving, and stress free, simply because it is a nice way to live and can contribute to an overall feeling of well being, says Platz.  There is no evidence, however, that a person prevents or causes cancer based on his or her state of mind. Still, we understand that a cancer diagnosis can make patients and families feel stressed and anxious, and these are not pleasant feelings.  So, we offer extensive patient and family services, including a cancer counseling center, pain and palliative care program, chaplain services and a meditation chapel, an image recovery center, and the Art of Healing art and music program. Email hoax contention #16: Oxygen Kills Cancer Cells Platz recommends regular exercise as a part of any healthy lifestyle, but says there is no evidence that breathing deeply or receiving oxygen therapy prevents cancer. On its Web site, the American Cancer Society includes the following statement about oxygen therapy, “Available scientific evidence does not support claims that putting oxygen-releasing chemicals into a person's body is effective in treating cancer.
